Two-time Academy Award winner George Clooney claimed that Maryland Gov. Wes Moore was the candidate "levitating above" the rest of the field of potential 2028 Democratic presidential contenders during an interview with CNN anchor Jake Tapper that aired on Wednesday (April 16).
“There’s one person in particular I think is spectacular,” Clooney said when asked which Democrat he believes could reclaim the White House.
“Who I think is levitating above that is Wes Moore,” he added.
The actor, who is a Democratic megadonor, praised Moore's response to the deadly Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, his service in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve and his work at a venture philanthropy firm as reasons for his early edge in the 2028 race.
“I think he is a guy that has handled this tragedy in Baltimore beautifully. He does two tours of duty in Afghanistan — active duty. He speaks beautifully. He’s smart. He ran a hedge fund — the Robin Hood Foundation. He’s a proper leader,” Clooney said via CNN.
“I like him a lot,” he added. “I think he could be someone we could all join in behind.”
Clooney also praised Democratic Govs. Andy Beshear of Kentucky and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan during the interview. Last year, Clooney publicly called for Biden to drop out of the presidential race on July 10, which was 11 days before the president ultimately announced his decision to end his re-election campaign.
“It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe ‘big F**king deal’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate,” Clooney wrote in a guest essay for the New York Times, referencing the Los Angeles fundraiser at the time.
