FLORIDA - The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) has announced the discontinuation of several specialty license plates, including the Boy Scouts of America plate, effective January 1st, 2024, due to insufficient sales.

State law mandates that specialty plates must maintain a minimum of 1,000 active registrations annually to remain in circulation.

The Boy Scouts plate, along with others, failed to meet this threshold, prompting their removal from the program.

The Boy Scouts of America specialty plate was introduced in 1997, with proceeds supporting local scouting programs across Florida.

Despite its initial popularity, registrations have declined in recent years, leading to its discontinuation.

Other plates facing the same fate include those representing various universities and organizations that did not sustain the required number of active registrations.

Florida offers over 100 specialty license plates, each supporting specific causes or organizations.

The state periodically reviews sales figures to ensure each plate meets statutory requirements.

Plates failing to maintain the minimum registrations are subject to discontinuation, allowing room for new designs that may garner more public interest.

Vehicle owners with discontinued specialty plates can retain them until the standard 10-year license plate replacement cycle concludes.

However, they are exempt from paying the additional annual use fee associated with the specialty plate during this period.

Upon renewal, owners will need to select from the remaining available specialty plates or revert to a standard Florida license plate.

The FLHSMV encourages motorists interested in specialty plates to review the current offerings and support causes that resonate with them.

By choosing specialty plates, drivers contribute to various charitable organizations and initiatives throughout the state.
