Miami-Dade, FL - A resolution introduced by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Keon Hardemon to rename several streets after hit songs by local artists was deferred during a commission meeting on Tuesday.

The proposal aimed to honor native musicians while also revitalizing the area by turning it into a tourist destination.

Under the resolution, streets between Northwest 18th Avenue and 19th Avenue would be co-designated with titles of well-known songs from Miami-Dade artists such as Betty Wright, Trick Daddy, Trina, Flo Rida, Rick Ross, and Pitbull.

During the meeting, some commissioners raised concerns about renaming more than ten streets with song titles that could be deemed inappropriate or confusing for residents.

Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins questioned the practicality of the changes, stating that the public had not been given enough opportunity to weigh in.

She illustrated her concerns with an example, imagining residents giving directions to their homes using new street names such as “Poor Little Rich Girl Street” or “Chase Dis Money Street,” which could create confusion and unintended perceptions about the community.

In response, Hardemon defended the resolution, emphasizing that it was designed to create an economic impact in an area that has long struggled financially.

He argued that by turning the neighborhood into a recognized cultural destination, the changes could encourage tourism and investment, potentially leading to new developments.

He pointed out that many of the vacant lots in the area are small and owned by different entities, making large-scale development challenging without attracting outside interest.

Despite the support, the commission ultimately deferred the proposal to a future meeting for further discussion.

Under the resolution’s criteria, artists must have achieved significant chart success on the Billboard Top 100 or Billboard 200 and have contributed to Miami-Dade’s cultural identity through concerts or philanthropic efforts.

Some of the proposed street names include "What's My Name Street" for NW 62nd Terrace, "Act Up Street" for NW 63rd Street, "Soul Ties Street" for NW 64th Street, "Post & Delete Street" for NW 65th Street, "Chase Dis Money Street" for NW 66th Street, and "Poor Little Rich Girl Street" for NW 71st Street.

The commission will revisit the issue at the next meeting, where the concerns raised will be addressed before any final decision is made.
