After lengthy debate, the Palm Beach County Commission has voted to move forward with plans to purchase an abandoned hotel.
The 114-room La Quinta Inn near West Palm Beach will house seniors and veterans ages 55 and older who are at risk of homelessness.
Not all Commissioners were on board during yesterday's meeting.
Maria Sachs called it a "great idea" but "wrong location."
Commissioner Marci Woodward said these folks need the assistance.
"We should do it because if this is preventing homelessness...people who their next option may be homeless shelter or living on the street, I want them to have a safe place."
The majority of Century Village residents have spoken out against the proposal for months. The retirement community is nearby the hotel, which is located off Okeechobee Boulevard near the Turnpike.
The county will pay nearly $17 million for the hotel, which is a million more than its appraised value.
People chosen to reside at the new facility won't do so for free. Depending on their income, rent will range from $300 to $800 per month.
County leaders say it could open within 3 to 6 months.
