A brush fire that sparked last Wednesday in South Miami-Dade County has grown and is posing a continuous threat to the two roads in and out of the Florida Keys.
The Florida Forest Service estimates its currently 3,600 acres and is only 20% contained.
Florida Forest Service District Manager Kevin MacEwen says while Card Sound Road remains closed, they're hoping to be able to reopen it. U.S. 1 has been reopened, with just a bit of the fire on the other side of the highway.
MacEwen says battling the flames have been a challenge because this is in the Everglades, it's difficult to prevent ground equipment from getting stuck, plus Mother Nature hasn't cooperated.
"That wind, and the [low] humidity, just makes everything even drier and the fire to move much faster than we can try to control," he admits.
Two FFS helicopters and one of Miami-Dade's have been fighting it from the air.
While the winds have died down today, they're expected to kick back up late Thursday.
No structures are in danger right now, but some power poles have burned along Card Sound Road.
