We spoke with the police chief in Palm Springs about how his officers handle illegal immigrants amid the Trump administration's crackdown.
"If we have someone that we suspect of being here illegally, we'll contact ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and they'll have to respond. We can't really legally hold on to someone based on...it's a civil warrant really. It's not a criminal warrant at this point."
Chief Tom Ceccarelli tells us that his agency is not actively looking for people in the country illegally, but he works with the feds.
Florida's orders to local sheriff's and police departments to let their deputies and officers be trained to perform the duties of federal immigration agents is being challenged in the courts.
"Until we get trained or certified that we can do it, that's kind of where the ball sits right now."
He says his officers would need specific training and right now he describes the situation as "in limbo."
"We've done this years before with other federal departments where we've been almost deputized as being, acting on behalf of that federal agency...like Customs or whatever but it still has to be coordinated through that agency."
