Broward's Former Schools Superintendent Avoids Perjury Trial

Broward's former Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie is avoiding a perjury trial.

On the day jury selection was set to begin, both sides have agreed to a deal.

Prosecutors won't pursue the case as long as Runcie pays court costs and stays out of legal trouble.

The state is also giving Runcie six months to, "render a statement to on April 1st, 2021, I was placed under oath before the 20th court of statewide grand jury. While under oath, I gave answers to questions, although I did not intend to commit perjury before the grand jury, some of those answers were misleading, inaccurate and therefore untrue."

The case was dismissed in 2023, but an appellate court last year overturned that decision.

The case was tied to a grand jury investigation into school safety following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018.
